A Conversation with Pat Buchanan (continued)

PM: You and I, since we're friends, will talk forever. And as friends, we've never spoken in these terms. But it's a must for me in interviews, I always like to ask, are you what you'd call a spiritual person in any way?

PB: Yeah. Oh, yeah. Absolutely. Because I mean, I just feel like I've been given a gift. I don't necessarily consider myself to be overtly Christian or anything, although I believe in God. But I definitely feel like the gift of creativity is something that some people get and some people don't.

PM: And it's something to be grateful for.

PB: Oh, absolutely. And one interesting thing, when you do this day in and day out, there's certainly some spiritual maintenance required, to make sure you can just kind of like--because being a session guy, you're just supposed to be on right now, boom, go.

PM: Right, right. "Give me a hook, give me a lick." Yeah.

PB: And be great, and be in tune and be in time, and be brilliant right now. Go.

PM: Right.

PB: Boom.

PM: "Even though my song sucks, be brilliant for me."

PB: [laughs] Being a session player--and it's totally cool--I think it's probably been like this down through time--Richard Bennett was telling me he'd talked to some of his idols in L.A., and it was kind of like that. You might not have control over the quality of the music you play, but you can play music. You can play your guitar for a living. So I feel like I've gotten my scales real balanced, to where I totally love every note I play. And I've got lucky enough to be known as a guy who plays from the groin--

PM: Right.

[laughter]

PB: --or just plays spirited, shall we say, or whatever--whatever you want to call it. Just not too worried about editing yourself.

PM: Well, as fantastic a session guy as you are, and as beautiful as your reputation is in that domain--

PB: Oh, thanks.

PM: --I think more and more you'll become known as a solo artist who's making great records on his own. And I think Saint George is going to really further cement that reputation in the eyes of the public--

PB: Cool.

PM: --as people come to know you in this most important way.

PB: Yeah, man. It's equally as important. And I'm very grateful for being able to wear a lot of different hats. That's another cool thing about Nashville, I mean, I there's no other place in the universe like this, is there?

PM: No. I mean, okay, so it's this or that, it's kind of flat, and it's the valley of the fevers and the weather kind of blows, but there's no place like Nashville. I love it here.

[laughter]

PB: Yeah, man. And I mean, it's truly a musical community where you can do a lot of different things, and people won't necessarily bust you for it, or whatever.

PM: Just the best musicians in the frickin' world.

Well, I love Saint George, and I know that a lot of people are going to get on to you from this interview.

PB: Thanks, buddy. It was an honor.
